Green Day's American Idiot

The Winnipeg Studio Theatre recently brought Green Day’s American Idiot musical to the Tom Hendry Warehouse Theatre. Winner of two Tony Awards and the 2010 Grammy Award winner for Best Musical Show Album, American Idiot is the story of three  friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9/11 world. The show features the music of Green Day with the lyrics of its lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong and book by Billie Joe Armstrong and Michael Mayer.

“This is a play about how I stopped being a total disaster and got my life back on track and did not let overwhelming feelings of anxiousness and loneliness and uselessness just like totally eat my brain,” declares Sherry Wickman, heroine for a new generation of underemployed college graduates. Things are looking up for Sherry – she’s found her first job after months of misery spent mostly at home in her childhood bed. Still, a few challenges remain. Her mother has locked herself upstairs, her sister is entrenched on the couch, her new boss wont leave his rifle at home, and a tigers escaped from the local zoo.

As part of their StudioWorks series, the Winnipeg Studio Theatre brought their production of ‘Show Choir’ to the Met Theatre this past weekend. The cast included Ghislaine Alleyne, Josh Bellan, Aron Broder, Christina Claeys, Holly Dandonneau, Anthony Ferens, Gabby Fontaine,Carlyn Graff, Laura Mitchell, Adele Poulin, Pamela Roz, Richard Smith, Luther Sousa, Ken Stone, Samantha Unrau, Hannah Wigglesworth, Meagan Yallowega. The production team included Brenda Gorlick [Director/Choreographer], Rebekah Jones [ Asst. Director/Choreographer], Brooke Pluta [Apprentice Director], Phil Corrin [Vocal Coach], and Trish Franklin [Accompanist].

Bad Jews

The Winnipeg Jewish Theatre is back for it’s 27th season with Joshua Harmon’s play ‘Bad Jews‘. This play tells the story of Daphna who has just returned from Israel, empowered by her journey and in love with an Israeli soldier. Meanwhile, her cousin Liam has fallen for Melody who is anything but Jewish. The cousins wage war over a coveted family heirloom in this no-holds-barred dark comedy about family, faith, ownership and love.

The show runs May 7th-17th at the Berney Theatre. The cast features Andrea Del Campo, Connie Manfredi, Justin Otto and Kristian Jordan, and the play was directed by Kayla Gordon.
